In the third task, Harry saved Cedric's life twice in the maze. Cedric wouldn't take the cup without Harry, so they grabbed it together. The cup was a portkey which transported them to a graveyard.
Voldemort and his servant Wormtail had been waiting for Harry to arrive. Wormtail murdered Cedric using the Avada Kedavra curse on Voldemort's orders. He even used his wand.
When Harry escaped the graveyard he took Cedric's body with him. Since Cedric requested it and took it back to Cedric's parents.
Professor Pomona Sprout was Head of Cedric's House and knew him best. She was chosen to comfort the Diggory's. The Ministry of Magic created a coverup and called Cedric's death an "accident". Both Harry and Dumbledore felt it was an insult to Cedric's memory. At the year's end feast, Dumbledore revealed to the entire school that Cedric was murdered by Voldemort. He stated that to attribute his death to an accident would be an injustice to Cedric. As a boy who was "good, and kind, and brave", he was a true Hufflepuff. Dumbledore ended the speech by saying "Remember Cedric Diggory".
Cedric's wand had Unicorn tail hair core in it. This association with Unicorns could be foreshadowing of Cedric's death. Since the Centaur Ronan, concerning the death of the Unicorn in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, says that "Always the innocent are the first victims."
